Revised Electronic Device Policy

As technology evolves we strive to use the most up-to-date resources to improve instruction and learning. At the same time, new technologies can cause distractions to the learning environment. It is becoming increasingly difficult to determine if a device is being used to listen to music, send a text message, make a phone call, surf the internet, photograph an exam or all of the above. Teachers are working hard to deliver meaningful instruction and should not have to divert their attention to determining if a device is being used appropriately or not. In an effort to eliminate distractions from the learning environment, we are implementing a school wide ban on all electronic devices beginning with the 2007 – 2008 school year. No electronic devices (phones, ipods, mp3 players, game systems, etc.) may be used during the school day (7 am to 3 pm) on the school campus and these devices must be turned off and put away. If a student has an electronic device out for any reason it may be confiscated by a teacher or other staff member. If confiscated, the consequences are as follows:

Violation	Action Taken
1st Offense	The device will be taken to the Assistant Principal’s office. The student may pick it up at the end of the school day on Friday (the following Friday if the device was confiscated on a Friday).
2nd offense	The device will be taken to the Assistant Principal’s office. A parent must pick up the cell phone the following school day. The student will be assigned one ATS (Saturday detention).
3rd Offense	The device will be taken to the Assistant Principal’s office. A parent must pick up the cell phone on Friday. The student will be suspended for one day.
4th Offense	Repeat 3rd – The number of days of suspension may increase for each additional offense.

Note: If a student needs to contact his/her parents/family members, he/she may use the phone in the main office.
